COVID-19

Prevalence

🦃 For the Thanksgiving week, the State level prevalence chart illustrates the onset of the Winter wave beyond the NYC region in the Midwest, Eastern seaboard, South and the West.

The second week sees the Winter COVID wave start in the Midwest, Florida and California

Trends

This past week saw New York state surprisingly register a minor decline in prevalence given much of the areas outside of NYC have significantly declining prevalence though NYC area including commuter towns in New Jersey and Connecticut continue to show a steady increase in prevalence. Carolinas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi and Nevada are other states with similar minor decline in prevalence last week.

🔻 Dakotas, Montana, New Mexico and Wyoming which have had a persistent high incidence from the Fall wave for a while noticeably are entering a short lull before the onset of the Winter wave.

🔺 Midwest from Midwest to Ohio, West Coast and the South are now secularly increasing as the Winter wave starts.

Variants

🦠 JN.1 is the defining variant of the Winter wave with most states experiencing the start of the Winter wave having around 5% of JN.1 prevalence. The NYC region is unique in that greater than 5% of the prevalence is due to JN.1 representative of the other states trailing NYC by a week or two.

JN.1 is driving the Winter wave

🚀 States such as California, Colorado, Louisiana, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas and Utah that had seen localized surges a week earlier from the onset of JN.1 saw the start of the Winter wave this past week. We can expect similar spikes in the states that are still green with low prevalence in the coming weeks.

Do take all precautions – staying home when sick, ventilation, masking, vaccines – to protect yourself and your community.

Vaccine

16% of adults have received the COVID vaccine till a week back indicating that getting to at least 25% coverage for this season is an unlikely scenario.

With the several months of high levels of immunity offered by the vaccines, if you have not received the vaccine yet, now is the time to get it before prevalence ramps up in December.

Flu

Nationally, Flu prevalence is showing some surprising pauses in the upward trend in some states such as Texas.
