State of Health Risks
As we start 2026, we are seeing a health risk landscape atypical of the last few years:
COVID-19
As opposed to the last few winters, this winter COVID-19 prevalence has been relatively low due to the low infectivity of the prevailing variants including the new BA.3.2 family that has led to numerous local spikes but not a sustained increase to create a new wave of infections. This low level of prevalence follows a summer 2025 wave that was relatively lower and later compared to 2024.
Flu
This winter Flu prevalence is higher than typical due to the novel Subclade K variant which was not part of the vaccine and not part of the prevailing population immunity from prior years. This is the second consecutive year of atypically high flu prevalence.
RSV
RSV is tracking closer to typical levels, and it’s still early in the season. It remains a concern for infants and seniors.
Measles
Measles continues to grow from a rare risk to a prevailing concern across the country this year.

This is a typical winter in terms of health risks of Severe Weather – use precautions where appropriate.
